- Web Hosting Features
Here I will discuss in detail each of the main web hosting features.
- Pros & Cons
Here I will take a close look at both the pros and cons of using HostGator Web Hosting. I’ll also cover some of the most frequently asked questions.
- Do I Recommend HostGator.com?
Here I’ll tell you whether I recommend them or if I think you would be better off using a competitor.
Let’s dive in but first a quick background.
HostGator was founded in 2002 by a young college kid by the name of Brent Oxley, HostGator finally landed its official office location in Houston, Texas after spending some quality time in Canada during its early days of operation. From there, they continued to grow, opening up another office in Austin, Texas, as well as expanding into Brazil.
By 2012, Oxley announced Endurance International Group (EIG) was acquiring HostGator. And, while this was a smart business move for Oxley and his crew, a move like this has the potential to create problems amongst those currently using, or looking to use, HostGator services.
Not sure why? Read up on EIG and its impact on the web hosting providers they have acquired.
That said, I am not here to tell you that its role in the EIG is inherently good or bad. In fact, HostGator has seen some great success over the years and has churned out hundreds of thousands of satisfied customers.
HostGator Web Hosting
Here are the different web hosting solutions they provide website owners.
Shared Web Hosting
HostGator offers extremely affordable web hosting packages for websites of all kinds and sizes. Separated into three distinct plans where the Hatchling plan is the cheapest:
Hatchling, Baby, and Business – shared plans have features that will meet your basic web hosting needs.
For instance, every web hosting package comes with a built-in Gator Website Builder for convenient drag & drop site-building. In addition, they come with the QuickInstall tool for installing a WordPress site, blog, forum, gallery, and ecommerce store scripts directly onto your site.
Not to mention the fact that they support WordPress sites, as well as Joomla, Drupal, Magento, Wiki, and phpBB hosting content management systems.
Additional features include:
- Unmetered bandwidth
- 99% uptime guarantees
- Free migration of your website, blog or online store
- Google AdWords and Bing Ads credits
- cPanel control panel
- PHP version 7 and SHS access
- Unlimited email accounts
- 24/7/365 tech support via phone, live chat, and email (ticket system)
It is important to note that web hosting will be the focus of this review, however other web hosting solutions will be shared with you in case you need something a little more robust.
HostGator Cloud Hosting
Their Cloud hosting services come with plenty of features for those looking to scale quickly. Enjoy optimal cloud caching solution, intuitive dashboard, and resource management capability. Plus, maintain complete control over your entire site with the easy to use cPanel.
In addition, quickly transfer all site data to another server in the case of a failure, and know that three mirrored copies of your website are hosted across multiple devices to ensure safety and redundancy.
Their cloud hosting starting at $4.95 / month, and scale up to the larger plans, priced at $6.57 / month and $9.95 per month as your needs become more demanding.
Shared vs Cloud hosting
Cloud hosting is better than shared hosting because it allows you to utilize the resources of multiple servers, rather than being limited to a single server HostGator Cloud gives you get all the features of shared hosting, but you get way more grunt!
2X Faster Servers
- Up to 2X faster load time and response time due to low-density servers, premium hardware, and multiple caching layers
- Your website content is managed more efficiently, enabling dynamic content requests to be processed lightening-fast
- Built-in caching makes your site load faster from the cloud due to an optimal caching configuration
4X More Scalable
- Ramp up your cloud resources as your online presence grows. One simple click is all you need – no data migrations, downtime or reboots
- Get server resources allocated and managed in the cloud!
- Lets you respond to those large traffic spikes without any service interruption
Managed WordPress Cloud Hosting
Okay so here is the plan that I like the most.
For those that work specifically with WordPress, HostGator has WordPress cloud hosting that caters to the WordPress platform and delivers all the needed features to run a fast, efficient, and highly secure website.
HostGator WordPress cloud hosting promises up to 2.5X faster load times due to super charged cloud architecture, low-density servers, CDN, and multiple caching layers.
In addition, this web hosting solution comes managed, meaning automatic updates to your WordPress core, plugins, and themes are handled by HostGator, as well as site backups and malware removal. You also receive free CDN service boosting content delivery to your site visitors.

If this is something you are interested in doing see if the one of the three plans available – Aluminum, Copper, or Silver – ranging from $19.95/month to $24.95/month, work for you. - Application Hosting. If you do not use WordPress as a CMS, HostGator has you covered. Running on Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP, HostGator can let you run platforms like Joomla, Magento, Drupal, Wiki, and phpBB Hosting. Plus, features like HostGator’s unmetered bandwidth, email marketing, and one-click installs of other helpful applications come included with any plan.
- Windows Hosting. Though Linux is preferred when it comes to web hosting, they make Windows hosting available for those that need it. With the Parallels Plesk Panel, IIS, Microsoft SQL Server 2012 R2, and ASP.NET support, this hosting solution is sure to have everything you need to run a user-friendly website.
As you can see, HostGator offers a web hosting solution for every budget, every website type, and size, and even goes so far as to cater to specific clients such as WordPress or Windows users.

SEO Review
Having an SEO strategy in place helps get your website found on popular search engine results. In fact, optimizing your website for SEO will boost your rankings and visibility in search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo.
If you find yourself needing some help formulating an SEO strategy, contact them for a free SEO consultation. From there, your dedicated Marketing Project Coordinator will help you launch the perfect marketing campaign by first auditing your site and conducting thorough keyword research related to your business niche.
Here is a breakdown of some of the strategies your Marketing Project Coordinator will put into place on your website to help influence search engine results:
- Keyword Research. Their in-house marketing experts will find the keywords that best relate to your niche, that will help you move up in search rankings, and that will resonate the most with your target audience. In addition, they will learn which terms are most used by your target audience in search queries, as well as monitor your site’s keyword success.
- Content Creation. Use their specialized team to create original content in order to drive traffic to your site and grow your audience.
- On-page Optimization. Let them optimize your website in terms of page titles, meta descriptions, and header tags so your site is indexed for higher search rankings.
PPC Services
Another great service they offer customers to help increase sales is their Pay-Per-Click services, otherwise known as PPC. Targeting customers with paid advertisements is a great way to encourage people to visit your site and ultimately make a sale.
Here’s what you get when you utilize their PPC services:
- Keyword Research. In-house marketing experts will utilize both local and global targeting methods, check out keywords used across multiple devices, and find the exact target audience your business needs. They will also help develop a “negative keyword list” so you stop attracting the wrong kind of audience to your website.
- Campaign Management. Call to actions, phone numbers, location information, and direct links to your site are all included in your PPC ads. In addition, watch your paid experts help boost your optimization score, keeping you within your cost per click budget.
In the end, they take it upon themselves to help their customers become successful. Providing SEO help and personalized marketing strategies, along with free Google AdWords and Bing Ads credits, there is no reason why your website cannot thrive.
Premium Services
They offer customers some exceptional premium services for those with a little wiggle room in their budget.
CodeGuard
With HostGator’s CodeGuard service, you receive features such as:
- Daily automatic backups on the cloud
- 16GB of storage
- Use on up to 5 websites
- Unlimited databases and files

- Easy management – view changes, schedule site monitoring, and manage email alerts
Starting at $2.00/month, this premium service is well worth the small price.

Plus, your site will be built on the most popular content management system to date, WordPress, which is known for being user-friendly and flexible.

Pros and Cons of HostGator Hosting
There always going to be pros and cons with any web hosting provider you choose to use. That’s why it’s important to evaluate your priorities and make sure the solution you go with does not sacrifice on any of those priorities.
The Pros
There are many reasons why they are such a popular web hosting company. Let’s see what the benefits are of using their web hosting plans.
Solid Uptime and Service
They promise a 99.9% uptime guarantee, which is great news for any website owner. However, it’s important to keep in mind that this is the standard and anything less is not generally tolerated.
Page speed is important, but it’s also important that your website is “up” and available to your visitors. I monitor uptime for a test site hosted on HostGator to see how often they experience outages.
Sites that load slowly aren’t likely to rise to the top in any niche. A study from Google found that a one-second delay in mobile page load times can impact conversion rates by up to 20%.
The above screenshot only shows the past 30 days, you can view historical uptime data and server response time at this uptime monitor page.
Adding to that, HostGator is prepared to compensate its customers with a one month credit if at any time the server falls short of the 99.9% uptime guarantee.
HostGator also provides great customer support 24 7 via phone, live chat, and via email (ticket system). Using their convenient Support Portal, you can get in touch with customer service and a web hosting expert, check out some of the community forums, knowledge base, and even access video tutorials meant to help you troubleshoot on your own.
Free Site Transfer and One-Click Installs
Again, this service is typically the norm for most web hosting companies, however, HostGator makes transferring from another host to them super simple. Simply sign up for the plan you wish to use, and let HostGator do the rest.
Adding to that, if you are new to owning a website, and HostGator is the first hosting solution you have ever used, rest assured that installing your preferred CMS is as easy as clicking a few buttons during sign up. Using their QuickInstall tool, you can easily set up your website without worrying about having technical knowledge.
(Almost) Unlimited Everything
Save for the most basic shared hosting package, which limits the domains to 1, HostGator offers unlimited everything (well sort of – see below) else which is great deal since their plans are so cheap to begin with.
Unlimited disk space means you can store as much data as you need. Unmetered disk space allows for seemingly limitless growth of your website while using an affordable shared hosting plan.
Having unmetered bandwidth means you can move an unlimited amount of data between your host server, your site visitors, and the internet. This is great for ensuring the speed and performance of your website, especially on a shared plan.
You also receive unlimited databases, which means you can have as many WordPress installs as you want. This is good for those who have many clients and want to test website changes before pushing them live.
“Unlimited” hosting is a myth and at least HostGator is transparent about their resource usage limitation. They offer “unlimited everything”, as long as you:
- Don’t use more than 25% of the server’s central processing unit (CPU)
- Don’t run more than 25 simultaneous processes in cPanel
- Don’t have more than 25 simultaneous MySQL connections
- Don’t create more than 100.000 files in cPanel
- Don’t check more than 30 emails per hour
- Don’t send more than 500 emails per hour
However, there is no limitation on:
- Bandwidth you use
- Email accounts you create
The Cons
As with everything, there are going to be some disadvantages to using such a cheap, web hosting solution. Let’s check out some of the things they can work on, and whether they will affect your final decision.
Limited Features
While the features provided are pretty standard, and unlimited everything is nice, the truth is, HostGator doesn’t offer shared hosting users a whole lot of extras.
Since this type of hosting is not managed, you will have to handle the administrative work your website needs, on your own. This means daily backups (though they’ll perform weekly backups), updates to any core, plugins, or themes you use (unless you opt for the slightly more expensive WordPress hosting), and security measures, are all your responsibility.
Pricey Domains
Though they do offer convenience when it comes to managing everything domain related, it is worth noting that some of their domain name prices are a bit high.
This is good to know because even if you do decide to go with a shared plan, you can always register and renew your domain with another, less expensive company and simply direct your DNS to HostGator straight from the cPanel.
It’s Part of EIG
Again, I am not going to attempt to sway you either way when it comes to Endurance International Group (EIG). However, most people who review hosting companies will say that a hosting company that is part of EIG runs the risk of harboring a bad reputation.
That’s because if you were to go with hosting company A (that is part of EIG and you didn’t know it) and have a bad experience, and move to hosting company B (also part of EIG and you didn’t know it), who is to say your experience is going to get any better?
Just be aware that HostGator is a part of this organization and that the way EIG runs things is probably going to trickle down into how HostGator handles things.

Do I Recommend HostGator?
For those looking for a simple, cheap shared hosting solution, Yes I think HostGator should be an option to consider.
However.
For those wanting a bit more oomph in terms of speed, security and features then I recommend their cloud plans.
Especially their managed WordPress hosting option as this gives you the speed and security you need without the high price tag.
Despite being a part of the EIG, they have a reputation for being one of the best web hosts on the market. They not only provide great shared hosting for site owners but offer many other exceptional solutions as well.
In fact, big names like WPBeginner love to share their positive experiences with using their dedicated server solution.
With a built-in site builder, an easy to use cPanel, and a QuickInstall tool for getting your preferred CMS (and other software) installed onto your site within minutes, HostGator is definitely a front-runner.
That said, their feature set is minimal, and while their customer service is top-notch and their uptime guarantee is something worthwhile, they may not have all the things you are looking for.
So, do your research and make sure to prioritize the features you need to grow your business into a successful one before signing up to be a customer with them.

Inconsistent?
For a whole good year everything went smoothly and there were no problems. But come my renewal around 2 months ago and I've been experiencing tons of problems? When you think about it for the price we're paying (you already know they aren't the cheapest out there) we ought to receive better service. New management or something? What's going on Hostgator?I won’t go anywhere else
I want to say a special thanks to Hostgator on the past year for providing excellent service. I don't think I'll be looking elsewhere, they are able to provide me everything I need. Incredible experience to say the least.Load of ****
THE SUPPORT IS NEARLY ZERO. Are you guys kidding me? I definitely think their response is based on their mood and when they feel like replying to your ticket. Its absolute garbage and a complete waste of money to be honest. I wonder if they get to read this because I definitely want a refund.Good actually
Actually they are excellent but I think could adjust on the price point. Am I being too stingy? Maybe, who knows. But I think they would definitely get more customers if they adjust their price range. But overall a good service indeed.Stay away from Hostgator and other EIG owned companies
I hate that I'm having to write such a poor review for this company. It used to be a great hosting provider before EIG took over. Stay far away from Hostgator. The quality of their servers (they still use HDD servers for most hosting plans) and customer support has tanked since EIG bought them out in 2012. My experience: On September 15th, 2020 I spoke with Joel N who is one of their representatives. He assured me that I'd be eligible for a complete refund if there were any issues with my hosting package. He not only stated that the services would be refunded, but went on to say that Hostgator would issue a prorated refund if I decided to end the relationship at any point in the future. His reassurances were what prompted me to pay $4,316.17 up-front for a 3 year hosting package during our call. Earlier today (October 2nd, 2020), I canceled my service due to their problematic servers and lack of support. Hostgator did not honor their refund policy and attempted to keep my money. I had to dispute the charge through my credit card company to get the money back. Hostgator along with other EIG companies are not reliable hosting providers. EIG has a very bad reputation of ruining the hosts it acquires. They fire great (expensive) support staff and migrate clients to a worse hardware infrastructure.Great prices
Shopped around for a while before settling on Host Gator. No regrets so far as their support staff has been friendly. I am new to building sites and their price is what ultimately got me attracted to their shared hosting plan, also the 45 day money back guarantee.Affordable Hosting
Extremely supportive team coupled with timely discount and incentives for long time customer makes Hostgator a better option then its competitorsFabulous HostGator!
Fantastic hosting service really. I have a small company based out of Singapore and I hosted the website through Hostgator and really enjoying the experience. uptime is high and speed is great. Enjoying each bit..thanks a ton!Flexible Hosting
In last five years, have renewed my hosting plan twice and have been awarded with new features and incentives each time as a token of appreciation for being part of this business relationship. The team is extremely supportive and we feel they are not the vendors to our business but partners in our business who love to see you and your business grow.Excellent service and support
Splendid is the experience. Really happy that me and my wife who run a small business chose HostGator. It was our decision to go with a reliable brand that we have known for some time. Thanks HostGator!Hosting made easy
Fantastic. Its been 4 years succesfully hosting my website and blog with HostGator India. I am thankful to their support team who have been quick in response time and solving uncomprehensive issues at random times of the day. Really superb support, hosting and a helpful account manager can never stop you from getting a good business site up.Meh
I see no point in using Host Gator. The hosting is average and you can get better hosting for not a whole lot more elsewhere. The domain costs are outrageous, I get better domain prices on some of the bigger hosting companies.Okay so far
I recently switched from Network Solutions (A NIGHTMARE - DO NOT USE THEM WHATSOEVER) and I had some issues migrating my old mailboxes. The support team said it would be completed in 3 days, but 5 days later nothing had happened. I called repeatedly and said I needed them up as soon as possible as it was promised to be completed in that 3 day timeframe. Later that day, I got a call from some higher up guy (a manager or something) and he was extremely nice and apologized for the delay. I appreciated that he took the time to call me. The migration was completed the next day. I was about to pull the plug on this company but because the manager guy called me, I had a little more patience. I still don't know why it took so long, but I appreciated that the guy called me and tried to help as best as he could.Malware on my WP sites.. Suspicious Sitelock emails.. Weird
I had malware on a few of my wordpress sites. Which is odd b/c I use Sucuri, Word Fence and other security plugins. THEN came the Sitelock emails. Over and over and over… I ignored. Finally my site was apparently so infected that they told me the only way to fix it was to pay for Sitelock. Something seemed really fishy. I just wiped out my whole hosting and started from scratch with the backups. We will see if this happens again. If it does, I know this is some sort of scam.Good hosting, watch out for unauthorized renewals
I run a food blog and have never had downtime on my site. I was charged for a renewal that wasn't supposed to be authorized, but when I called they straightened it out.Meh, not happy anymore
Gone are their glory days, don't get me wrong I used to love Inmotion but now I feel like they're just misleading with everything they advertise. I never got an apology for something that wen't wrong when I reported it to Customer Support. I do not recommend them at all.one of the better hosting companies imo
Use their reseller hosting plan, sites are fast, no lag or downtime. A++++Put off by a customer service rep
I contacted HostGator after using their basic hosting plan (in which I had no issues) for a year. I wanted to upgrade my hosting. After holding forever on the phone, the customer service rep tried to upsell like crazy, almost ignoring my questions. I was very put off by that, especially how he kept repeating my name like "You see, Greg, what you need to do in this case Greg" it came off as condescending. I finally said I would think about it and he wouldn't let me get off the phone! I finally said "I gotta go now bye" and just hung up. Very strange. I hope they screen their customer support calls.Very good!
Thank you for the informative post. Really the post contains large information on Hostgator web hosting.Reliable and affordable
Reliability and affordability are the main factors as to why I went with them. I know there are a lot of hosting providers out there and I settled with Inmotion mainly because of those two factors. Customer Service is quick to assist if you have any questions, and that's just what I need to get things going smoothly.Got a good tech person on the phone
Had an overload issue with my databases. They cut off my access to my sites, which was frustrating but when I called, the support person was friendly and got my database issues sorted out. I had called right before that, and the guy said I had to fix the issues myself. It always helps to call twice, or even three or four times, you never know what tech person you will get who might help you out. Some go by the book and some genuinely want to help you.Not the best for ecommerce
Tech support said my ticket was in queue. Site has been down for 4 days now. I host ecommerce sites and this is making me lose $$. Hostgator has a good price for hosting but don't use it if you have ecommerce, not worth it.What’s not to like?
I am an new customer and I've had a pleasure experience so far. Their cheapest package fit the bill for me and my business and I'm glad that I got onboard with them. They were quick to activate my hosting account despite the strict verification processes they had in place which made me feel secure on how much they care about quality service.cPanel isn’t the best
I tried to work on my site and do some upgrades via cPanel. The cPanel seemed to load slowly, which I wasn't happy about. The hosting overall is decent, so no complaints there.I have been using Hostgator for many many years with zero problems
I have been using Hostgator for many many years with zero problems. Not sure why everyone gives bad reviews for them.Average Hosting
Average hosting. Site has been a little whacky at times when logging into my account. Not sure they really do "uptime monitoring" but haven't had any issues yet with that. It’s your money to burn!
Since HostGator made SiteLock, a security firm, their partner site, sh*t hit the fan. They purposely put malware on my sites and then asked me to get it removed professionally via guess what?? Yeah, SiteLock! Just to squeeze more money out of their customers HostGator is now using ‘dirty tricks’ to subsidize their income. It’s damn shameful for a company to do this. I know other people have had this issue too with them but if you still feel they are an ethical company then by all means use them. It’s your money to burn!Something is not right
Calling them takes forever and I wanted my problem solved immediately! It has affected my business a lot and I practically got nothing done with the poor customer support. Do they lack lines available for assistance or what? Waste of money!!Hosting comes with SSL!
I love that Hostgator comes with SSL. This is why I chose them. It's totally worth the $$ considering other hosting companies charge an arm and a leg! Site has run smoothly so far.Hostgator is an amazing host
Hostgator is an amazing host and great explained by Matt Ahlgren. I used a coupon code to get discounted hosting 😛They don’t care if your site is down for days
If I could give them ZERO stars, I would! After having slow websites, I decided to upgrade the server in hopes that my clients' sites would load faster. Instead, the sites were down for 3 days after the "upgrade". The support people didn't seem phased too much by this at all. They just kept saying that my case had been escalated. When it's time to renew, I am getting out of this company. You would be a fool to use Hostgator
You would be a fool to use Hostgator, their customer support is terrible and your website if even meaningfully successful will hit some imaginary threshold on their part and they will freeze your site for a few days without any replies. They do pay a lot for referrals however.I would give them half a star
Three and a half stars for support???….lol If I felt generous I would give them half a star. Their support staff are not as knowledgeable as they should be. For example, one member did something for me one day and I needed it repeated for a different domain the following day. I was told that it was not possible. Even after I stated that it had been done the previous day he still stated that it couldn’t be done. This is just one eample of a few problem I had with their support. Because of this and other issues I had with them I wouldn’t recomment Hostgator to anyone.terrific value for money
Thanks for this and I can only agree with you. I was somewhat reluctant to sign up with Hostgator’s cloud plan (especially as I’ve had the displeasure of dealing with them in the past using a shared plan) but I was pleasantly surprised with their Cloud hosting. It’s laser fast and terrific value for money.Great customer support!
I can get someone to help me within a minute or two via chat! I love that they have the chat system, it's saved me a lot of time.
